Many years later, rumors of Ovid's death reach Rome. " untrustworthy" and has been removed to Tomi, a remote port on the Black Sea. Rome during Augustus' reign, with its pompous displays, useless luxuries, and endless public rituals, has no room for a skeptic, a subtle, polished poet. And a very useful reference section at the back for those who can't keep track of every single character in Ovid and what happened to them. Lots to reflect on about the power of great narrative and the problems of climate-change, populism, authoritarian government, anarchy, refugees, etc. Could it be that Naso's great lost book has embedded itself into the structure of the world itself?Ī clever, interesting, and rather strange book, but a satisfying and thought-provoking (even prescient) one as well. And there seems to be something oddly familiar about the names and stories of the butcher Tereus and his wife Procne, the carpet-weaver Arachne, the shopkeeper Fama, the ropemaker Lycaon, and the rest of the local inhabitants. But this isn't Augustan Rome as we know it - or at least not unless Roman historians were keeping very quiet about things like bus stops, P.A. A traveller from Rome arrives in a small port on the Black Sea coast, in search of the great poet Naso, who has been exiled there by the Emperor, and is now rumoured to have died.

I loved the drama of Cullen and Joseph in previous books, and I, along with a bunch of other fans, have been hoping and waiting for them to get their shit together and get together! Here we finally are… Will he work out his issues in time to save what he’s spent years denying? Joseph knew sending Cullen away was the kindest thing to do for the younger man, but when he hears Cullen truly may be moving on, he realizes it’s time to reevaluate his life. Meanwhile, after years of dancing around their mutual attraction, Cullen Bryant decides the time has come to lay his feelings for Joseph Allenbrand on the line. Unfortunately, setting up a new community takes him away from his partner, Mario, who isn’t pleased about being left behind. He discovers a small fishing village in Maine for sale and begins to make plans to purchase the picturesque town of Lobster Cove. When the town of Cattle Valley runs out of room for new construction, Asa Montgomery begins to look into alternative locations. I have always said that the best part of science fiction is the ability to play with ideas. The news media is always on the wrong side of things, but our hero starts making plans to defend earth, while making a ton of money. And bad politicians that want to tax everything away or concede everything to the bad aliens. There are, of course, bad aliens that want to take away all the good stuff. A super intellegent rugged individualist that happens to have been a science fiction comic book author meets an alien at a comic book conference. One of the few narrators I have heard that could do a child's voice without making me gag. The narrator is superb - lovely voice with excellent character voices. In spite of some flaws, overall, I found the book immensely entertaining, terribly imaginative, and far more literary than many sci-fi novels. Characters are likable, settings are wonderfully vivid, but the plot gets far more convoluted than necessary. There are so many interesting sociological themes woven into this book that an English teacher could have a real field day with it. The second half of the book is rather irritating with dangling plot points, gratuitous sex (not needed and worse yet, not erotic) and torture scenes, and ultimately a rushed ending. The first half of the book is truly brilliant both science fiction and fantasy woven together with beautiful Victorian-toned prose. The Diamond Age is both amazing and frustrating. |
